Being conscientious about what we consume and the impact our choices have on the environment has become a priority. From replacing plastic with sustainable alternatives to adopting eco-friendly cleaning solutions, we're constantly seeking ways to reduce our ecological footprint.
One significant change we've embraced involves reimagining our dental care routine. Today, I'm excited to share with you one of our favourite recipes – a simple and effective homemade toothpaste that not only keeps our teeth clean but also aligns with our commitment to a plastic-free lifestyle.
The Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup bicarbonate of soda
- Water
- A couple of drops of peppermint, spearmint, or your preferred essential oil for flavour
- One small sterilised glass jar (sterilise by placing your clean, still wet jar in the microwave on full power for about 45 seconds)
Instructions:
1. Place the baking soda in the jar.
2. Slowly add water until it forms a paste – thin enough to coat your toothbrush, but thick enough to adhere.
3. Add one to two drops of essential oil and mix thoroughly.
4. Stir the paste each time before use.
And there you have it – your very own homemade toothpaste!
Why DIY Toothpaste?
Our homemade toothpaste is not just a plastic-free alternative; it's also free of common ingredients found in commercial toothpaste, such as fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate. By making this simple switch, you not only contribute to reducing plastic waste but also eliminate potentially harmful chemicals from your dental care routine.
A Fresh Start
While the transition to homemade toothpaste may take a few days to get used to, particularly due to its less sweet taste compared to commercial brands, the benefits far outweigh the adjustment period. Your teeth will feel cleaner, and your breath will be refreshingly natural.
Embracing Sustainable Living
By taking small steps like creating your own toothpaste, you're contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. It's empowering to know that simple changes in our daily routines can have a positive impact on both our well-being and the health of our planet.
So, why not give it a try? Make your dental care routine a conscious choice for a healthier you and a happier planet. Homemade toothpaste – a small change with big benefits.
